I recently finished David Markson's novel Wittgenstein's Mistress, and I thought the book was smart, beautiful, unique, and, at times, moving. Markson's Wittgenstein's Mistress got a huge plug from David Foster Wallace, but Markson's index-card tetraology of Reader's Block, This is Not a Novel, Vanishing Point, and The Last Novel, are to me, more rereadable. My justification for missing the former is that I spilled tea on the front page. However, the reader is left wondering whether this is the picture that the writer wanted to bring forth when the idea of writing Wittgenstein's Mistress first struck him. Or, if you prefer, Henry James's Wittgenstein's Mistress? Your library only has one of the Austrian's novels in translation: Wittgenstein's Mistress. Who or what inspired you to write this book? A while back, while doing some critical writing about Wittgenstein's Mistress, I found myself desperately wishing that it had an index…so I made an index. Among the Familiars of Wittgenstein's Mistress. How long did it take you to write the first draft of the manuscript? Giotto, because he could draw a perfect circle, or at least it is harmless to think he could. Wuthering Heights, which I read many years ago and remember fondly, is referenced in a book I'm currently reading called Wittgenstein's Mistress by David Markson.
