I recently finished David Markson's novel Wittgenstein's Mistress, and I thought the book was smart, beautiful, unique, and, at times, moving. Markson's Wittgenstein's Mistress got a huge plug from David Foster Wallace, but Markson's index-card tetraology of Reader's Block, This is Not a Novel, Vanishing Point, and The Last Novel, are to me, more rereadable. My justification for missing the former is that I spilled tea on the front page. However, the reader is left wondering whether this is the picture that the writer wanted to bring forth when the idea of writing Wittgenstein's Mistress first struck him.
